Step into the realm of Contemplative Arts with us! Unblock your creativity with Breath/Read/Write, Lisa’s guided meditation and free-writing process. Then Suzy will lead us through dynamic gestures and ink techniques. Join us for a day of playful creative discovery.
All are welcome, regardless of experience level.
Art supplies, lunch and complimentary (optional) yoga class are included.
Just bring a pen and notebook.

What to expect
10-11am Yoga- complimentary optional class with Stone Wave Yoga Instructor
11:30-1:45pm Suzy & Lisa introduce you to the day. Then Lisa presents Breath/Read/Write, her combination of guided meditation and free-writing. Ease your way into the open space of silence & write from its web of possibilities
Lunch will be served | Tea is available throughout the day
2:30-4:30pm Working with ink & water, Suzy tunes into the space between intention and chance. You will be guided through hand and body gestures & ink techniques, unleashing fluid forms and vibrant colors. This process of direct experience continues to be Suzy’s grounding practice & a lot of fun; she looks forward to sharing it with you!
4:30-5:30pm Lisa & Suzy’s contemplative arts writing and drawing workshop allows us to let go of expectations, flow with surprise, and be alive with wonder. Our day concludes with time to share your works & discuss the process. Signed copies of Suzy’s new book of poetry and ink works SEE/SAW will be available.

About Lisa and Suzy
Suzy Sureck is an internationally recognized multidisciplinary artist whose sculpture and video installations, video, writing, and drawing involve physical and metaphoric qualities of wind, water, and the poetics of shadow and light. Cross-pollinating disciplines, she merges technology and traditional media to bring nature’s wisdom to audiences experientially through audio, video, text, and image. Drawing with light, she creates wall sculptures, and immersive experiential installations. Suzy’s works have been exhibited in galleries, museums, sculpture parks, biennials, and alternative spaces in the U.S., Europe, the Middle East, Korea, Australia, and India. Recent works include projection performances in the Hudson Valley, Germany and Lincoln Center.
She has been awarded residencies at MassMOCA, Yaddo, Virginia Center for Creative Arts, Art Omi, Studios of Key West, and Arts, Letters Numbers. Her works have been reviewed in the New York Times, Hyperallergic, Sculpture Magazine, World Art, Flash Art and. New Observations. In 2023, she completed her first book of poetry and drawings title SEE/SAW. Suzy received a Masters’ Degree in Sculpture from Cranbrook Academy in Michigan and a BFA from the Cooper Union, as well as studying at The Slade School of Art in London. She lives and works in New York and is an educator at Pratt Institute and DIA.

Lisa Freedman is an author, activist, and professor of creative writing at The New School in New York City. She holds an MFA from the New School and is certified as a mindfulness meditation teacher by Dhama Moon/Tibet House. She founded and directs Breathe/Read/Write, an online community that weaves meditation and freewriting. As a writing coach, Lisa brings a mindful approach to drafting, crafting, revising, and polishing. Her writers work in multiple genres and benefit from the clarity and support that comes from the process of getting centered together.
Lisa has taught and presented extensively -- for the International Women’s Writing Guild, New York Zen Center, United Nations, Extinction Rebellion, and many others. She’s the proud compiler (in collaboration with the International Women’s Writing Guild) of ROOTS/TRUNK/SKY, a collection of writings from the Imagination and Justice Meditation and Free-Writing Circles. Lisa’s poems and prose have appeared in Satya Magazine, The New York Times, the anthology Resist Much, Obey Little, and more.
