Kinder Words for Myself

A few years ago when I went on my first solo van trip, I committed to incorporate some exercises to improve my self-care. Coming through the pandemic had left me feeling depleted to say the least.

One of these exercises was to tell myself daily 'I am doing great,' 'I am beautiful,' and 'I like myself.'

At first the exercise felt weird, especially that I was traveling alone and had committed to saying these things out loud several times a day.

The phrases felt foreign and forced at first. Even fake.

The fact that this was so strange (and hard) was so revealing.

I realized that saying nice things to myself intentionally was not only unnatural, but something that clearly needed attention.

Today, as new challenges arise, I recommit to this exercise of finding kinder words for myself.

Without an intentional commitment to positive self-talk, it's very easy to allow negative outside opinions, challenges and bad news to dominate ones internal dialogue.

This past week, my theme in all my classes was self kindness. I invited (myself) and our students to consider bringing in (with intention) more positive self reflection on a daily basis.

Kinder words to ourself will help us expand our compassion towards others.

Recognizing that relationships are core to who we are becoming and therefore practicing being tender, courteous, helpful, forgiving and compassionate towards others begins with intentionally having this for yourself.

Scripture Share from The Epistle of Colossians 3
. . .clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
